Small things you can do to change the world

Katie Stagliano’s story starts with a cabbage seedling. When Katie was in third grade, she brought home a small cabbage seedling that she planted in her backyard and nurtured it to grow to a whopping 40 pounds! She knew that her cabbage was destined for great things, so she donated it to a local soup kitchen where it was able to feed over 275 people. Inspired by the good she saw come from donating fresh produce to the soup kitchen, she founded Katie’s Krops which has donated thousands of pounds of produce from over 100 Katie’s Krops gardens around the country dedicated to feed people in need.

Just think what the future would be like if all children truly believed that one person, including themselves, can change the world!

Change starts with something small, like a seedling. Here are 5 small things you can do TODAY to start changing the world in 10 minutes or less.

5 Small Things to Change the World:

  1. Do something kind for someone else. Studies show that not only does an act of kindness positively affect the person receiving it, it also positively affects the person doing the kind act, AND anyone who witnesses the kind act! Anyone who becomes aware of the kind deed is more likely to go out and do something else kind for others. Kindness grows exponentially!

  2. Clean up. If you see litter or something out of place at your local park, at the store parking lot, along the sidewalk--wherever you are today--take initiative and clean it up. By doing that, you are helping to maintain a clean and beautiful world. And, if others see you doing it, they are more likely to do it too! So, return that stray shopping cart, or pick up that piece of garbage and throw it away. Every little bit helps.

  3. Spread positivity. Like kindness, positivity is contagious. In today’s world where conflict abounds, and seemingly everyone has to get in “the last word” to show that they are right, and others are wrong, everyone can use a healthy dose of positivity. Whether you are spreading positivity to your neighbors in the grocery check-out line, or in a social media post, your light will change the course of someone else’s day.

  4. Learn more about a cause you are interested in supporting. Big change happens when people rally around a worthy cause. What is something you feel passionate about? Is there a need in that area that you can support? Take 10 minutes to read more about ways to support your cause (Are there any local groups or charities you can join to help? Maybe it’s as simple as growing a garden to help others get access to fresh produce.)

  5. Take ten to act. Now that you have a cause you’re passionate about, take 10 minutes to act on your next steps. For example, if you want to donate diapers to a local women’s shelter, take ten minutes to gather your diapers into a bag and put it into your car. If you want to volunteer at the local soup kitchen, call in and set up a time to go. If you want to clean up a local park, create an event on your calendar to do it.
